Just a little more than a year ago, we founded Instana with the vision of building the next generation application performance monitoring solution. Last week Gartner named us a Cool Vendor in Availability and Performance.
We were very honored to be named “cool” by the analysts of Gartner – but what does “cool” mean? Wikipedia says “Coolness is an admired aesthetic of attitude, behavior, comportment, appearance and style, influenced by and a product of the Zeitgeist“.
Yes – Instana is influenced by and a product of the Zeitgeist – the spirit of our time. We are living in the time of digitalisation in which almost every product is defined by software. This has led to a dramatic change how we develop and operate software.
Feedback and delivery cycles have to be as short as possible which has impacted how we organise teams (Agile, DevOps) and fostered automation of build, test, deploy and release tasks (Continuous Delivery). At the same time systems have changed because of demand for higher scale and different types and speed of data processing. Microservice and Lambda architectures are the foundation of so called web-scale architectures which refer to the work of companies like Google, Facebook or Netflix. New types of technologies like the SMACK stack (Spark, Mesos, Akka, Cassandra, Kafka) have become an integral part of modern software.
This is the Zeitgeist not only of startups and web-scale companies but also a major change in how traditional enterprises are building systems of innovation to create new digital businesses for their customers.
The elastic, dynamic and resilient nature of these systems in combination with the high frequency of changes in infrastructure and code transitions the way we operate, manage and monitor these type of systems. Instana is built from scratch – we reinvented every part of a monitoring system – to deal with the new challenges of this Zeitgeist. Instana was build to be highly scalable, react to changes in realtime and extract information out of the mass amount of data that monitoring generates in these environments.
I am happy to work with such a talented team, great advisors and investors along with our beloved customers who have helped us build Instana and enable us to receive this recognition by Gartner.
