Service Performance Analysis with Application Perspectives

August 8, 2018

Instana has always automatically monitored and analyzed all services along with their performance and health. But wouldn’t it be great if you could understand the quality of all of the services that you are responsible for at a glance? In the latest version of Instana, you get that capability and more.

Seeing All Monitored Services

When you enter the “Application” screen in the Instana UI, you will notice there is an Applications view and a Services view. The Applications view is a tabular list of all the Application Perspectives you have access to within this Instana instance. The Services view is a tabular list of all the services monitored by this Instana instance. There is no filtering applied by default so it should be an extensive list.

In the top right corner you can filter the table to display only the services you are interested in by selecting type, technology, or typing in the search box.

All-Service-View

Clicking the table header labels sorts in either ascending or descending order so that you can quickly focus on the services that are slow or throwing errors.

The “Health” field will either be blank or it will display a health indicator that shows the number of health rule violations along with the severity.

It’s important to note here that type and technology for each service are automatically determined by Instana. There’s no need to define the details of a service to Instana.

Only Show Services in My Application Perspective

While it’s great to be able to filter the entire list of monitored services, the real power is in creating an Application Perspective that shows only the services that are important to you. After you have created an Application Perspective, click on the name of that perspective to shift focus and enter the curated dashboards.

By default you will land on the summary dashboard. Click the services view to pull up the table that you are already familiar with. This time, instead of showing ALL service being monitored, the table shows ONLY the services that belong to your application perspective. If you click on any of the services in the table you will transition the focus to that individual service and all curated dashboards will update to provide information related to that service.

Instana’s new Services views make it quick and easy to gain a deep understanding of exactly how any or all of your services are performing at any given time. Combined with Application Perspectives you now have the ability to focus on the exact services that are important to you and your team.
